Chapter Fourteen

Bria had been warned.

Sam had made it more than clear he intended on showing her the ‘real him’ over the next week and after their tour of the palace concluded yesterday, and she’d had time to distance herself from the memory of his mother’s sitting room and what had taken place there, she’d rationalised the whole thing.

His highness could try and impress her all he liked by showing her his human side; it didn’t mean she had to succumb to his charms. So when he’d offered to take her to Adhara City for her first trip into his country’s capital she’d accepted, safe in the logic that Sam could try to schmooze her all he liked and it wouldn’t do him an ounce of good. She’d be on guard and ready for whatever he dished out.

However, that didn’t stop her pulse pounding when she climbed into the front seat of the four wheel drive and Sam slid behind the wheel.

“You’re driving?”

“Yes. Hakim has some other business to take care of later. He will follow behind us and keep watch from a discreet distance while we’re in the city. Is there a problem?”

“No, not at all,” she said, fixing a too bright smile on her face before staring out the side window, anything to distract from noticing how incredibly handsome he looked in his uniform.

He’d been impressive enough in the designer suits he’d favoured in Melbourne but there was something about a man in uniform, an added air of authority and superiority he didn’t have without it.

“Good. The mosaics you are interested in for your client are on the outskirts of the capital so I thought we could look at them first, then drive through Adhara City afterwards? Give you an opportunity to see some of the early development?”

Bria refrained from snorting, just. “Give me an opportunity to fall in line with your plan, you mean? Show me the city, dazzle me with a little PR and hope I jump at your crazy scheme?”

Sam didn’t take his eyes from the dusty road, though his fingers clenched the steering wheel tighter.

“I can assure you that marriage to me would not be crazy,” he said, his voice low, tight, controlled, the husky timbre in stark contrast to his tense posture.

She’d insulted him.

A man of his status, with hordes obeying his every whim, wouldn’t be used to refusal let alone someone flinging his proposal back in his face.

Embarrassed by how churlish she’d sounded, she said, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to ridicule you. It’s just that I’m having a hard time absorbing all this.”

His hands relaxed on the steering wheel and he shot her a glance bordering on tender. “Let us be friends, enjoy each other’s company, and leave any decisions until the end of the week. Is that so difficult?”

While he talked the talk, did he have any idea exactly how difficult this was for her? It was hard enough holding him at arm’s length when she despised him for wanting to
